February was our school’s month dedicated to children’s rights and child safety. We will have guest speakers during the month, and Mallika Swaminathan talked to us on the 8th of February. She spoke about children’s rights. Mallika told us a story about a boy who lost his home after it was burned to the ground in war. She told us that every child had a right to certain things in the world, that shouldn’t be limited by his or her country or abilities.
Mallika used to be part of an organization called Chetana when she lived in India. Chetana is an organization that works to increase awareness and access to education for all. ‘Chetana’ itself means ‘awareness’ Hindi.
When I say ‘awareness’, I mean awareness by making children with disabilities become aware of their potential. Chetana strives to help children and their parents, and making others aware that different opportunities exist to make their lives more efficient and improve their lives. Many people have benefitted from Chetana’s toys and information. I think Chetana and its goals are a great way to help people—and I hope that Chetana can help many more people in the future.
